Pardon the silly pun but this article from The Guardian is not very cheerful: Warning of ‘ecological Armageddon’ after dramatic plunge in insect numbers. Apparently, the number of insects in Germany has fallen by 75% over the last 27 years. This is even worse than an article from last summer, concluding that the number of marine species along the Swedish West Coast had declined by approximately by approximately 60% during the last 70 years: Obst, M., Vicario, S., Lundin, K. et al. Which part of “we are destroying life on Earth” don’t we get? How is it possible not to understand that overconsumption is killing the only habitable planet in the known universe? How long are we going to stand by and watch the politicians rearranging the deck chairs on the Titanic, even though our own children are likely to drown as a consequence?
The good news is that we can still solve the problem by pulling the economic emergency brake: stop buying and stop flying. If enough of us agree to enjoy life rather than trying to max out on material consumption, the global economy would implode very quickly. It is very easy: spend time with your family and read a good book. Your children will be grateful and you will be a lot happier. We simply need to organize a consumer strike.
